WHAT IS NATIONAL SAFE TRACTOR PROGRAM?

This certification is for youth of 14 and 15 years of age to legally operate farm equipment for hire.  After completing the training course, youth will be required to pass a written knowledge test and driving test to receive the certification.

This National Safe Tractor Training Program enables young workers (ages 14-19) to obtain a US Department of Labor Certificate of Training Certification which is required to operate farm tractors and equipment. 

The program includes training on farm safety, tractor safety, tractor operation and other related topics.Students learn important safety skills and gain an advantage when seeking employment at a lawn or landscaping business, golf course or farm.

AIM

Since 1969, the U.S. Department of Labor has declared many agricultural tasks to be hazardous to youth younger than the age of 16. Employment of youth under 16 for tasks that require operation of a tractor and machinery is illegal unless the youth are certified.

HOW IT BEGAN?

The National Safe Tractor Program (NSTP) was developed through a collaborative effort involving Penn State University, Ohio State University, and the agricultural division of the National Safety Council.

The NSTP was originally developed and designed for 14and 15yearolds seeking employment in production agriculture. The U.S. Department of Labor's Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture regulation prohibits 14 and 15yearolds from operating farm tractors and attached powered equipment unless the youths have successfully completed an approved safe tractor and machinery operation training program

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

In order to complete this course and receive the appropriate certification, the participant must:

• Pre-register and pay the appropriate fee. Attend scheduled classes and actively participate. Attendance will be recorded.
• On-line registration
• Signed Acknowledgement of Risk Form
• Reading assignments in the manual as the course progresses, weekly quizzes.
• Complete the final practical driving exam.
• Must get 70% grade in the final written exam.
• Portions of the sessions may be located in unheated facilities or outdoors.
