Answer: By Tracto Gyan
As per RTO rules in India, you need an LMV (Light Motor Vehicle) license to drive a tractor on private farm land. And you must have a valid commercial or tractor-specific driving license to drive on public roads.
Driving Tractors on the Farm
Since farm tracks and fields are private property, people consider that there is no legal requirement for a license. But as per RTO laws, to handle the machine safely, you must have an LMV license.
Driving Tractors on the Road
The moment your tractor tyres touch a public road, the RTO rules apply. For a tractor used in farming, you generally need a Learner’s or Permanent License (often under the LMV or "Tractor" category). If the tractor is being used for commercial hauling (like pulling a trolley of bricks), you specifically need a Commercial Driving License. Driving on the road without one can lead to heavy fines or issues with your insurance if anything goes wrong.
