Top 12 Largest Producers of Sugarcane in India - State Wise

Top 12 Largest Producers of Sugarcane in India - State Wise

30 Oct, 2024

Sugarcane is a significant cash crop and a crucial component of their agricultural economy. Producers of sugar, ethanol, and jaggery use sugarcane as a fundamental raw material.  In this blog, we discuss the Top 10 largest Producers of sugarcane in india.

Indian sugarcane production grew to 490.53 million tons between 2022 and 2023. Some states are better at growing sugarcane than others because of their geography and climate. We will talk about the 12 largest Producers of sugarcane in India.

Top 12 Largest Sugarcane Producing State in India

1. Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh produces the largest sugarcane producing state in india. It produced 224 million tons of sugarcane which is approximately 45.7% of the total production.

Sugarcane grows in Uttar Pradesh's subtropical environment, with annual rainfall ranging from 900 to 1,200 mm. The alluvial soil in the Gangetic plains of UP contains many nutrients that are favorable for sugarcane cultivation.

2. Maharashtra

Maharashtra is the second-largest sugarcane producer in India, having produced 123.97 million tonnes. Because of its great water retention ability, sugarcane grows well in Maharashtra's black cotton soil. The state receives an average of 700 to 1,000 millimeters of precipitation per year, which aids in agricultural growth.

3. Karnataka

Karnataka is the third-largest producer of sugarcane in India, producing 59.35 million tons per year. The state's extensive sugar mills and ethanol facilities have helped it become a prominent player in the sugar sector.

The yearly rainfall fluctuates between 750 and 1200 millimeters, and the summers are humid. In the south and north regions, red, sandy soil promotes the growth of high-yield sugarcane types.

4. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is the fourth largest sugarcane producing state in India. A total of 17.66 million tonnes of sugarcane was produced in the last financial year. The sugarcane industries of the state produce a variety of products, including ethanol, jaggery, and sugar.

Tamil Nadu has a mild climate with a consistent rainfall of 800 to 1000 mm. The state's production per hectare in comparison to other regions is a result of the fertile alluvial and red soils and well-irrigated areas. Additionally, the utilization of modern agricultural techniques is advantageous to the state.

5. Gujarat

Gujarat produced 13.46 million tonnes of sugarcane last year, making it the fifth-highest sugarcane-producing state in India. sugarcane is grown on black soil In central and southern Gujarat, where it rains between 700 and 1000 mm a year. People use the water of the Narmada River to irrigate their crops, which increases crop growth.

6. Bihar

Bihar also produces about 12.74 million tonnes of sugarcane every year, putting it in sixth place in India. The sugarcane business in the state is very important for making both sugar and jaggery.

Bihar's alluvial soil, especially along the Ganges, and the state's warm monsoon climate with moderate rainfall (1,000–1,200 mm) allow sugarcane to grow very well. The long growth season means that more sugarcane is harvested.

7. Haryana

Haryana produced 8.86 million tons of sugarcane. It has become the sixth-largest producer of sugarcane in India. The total production majorly contributes to sugar production and biofuel generation.

Haryana has fertile terrain and a well-developed irrigation infrastructure that draws water from both rivers and tube wells. The state has warm weather and gets about 500 to 700 mm of rain a year, which makes it a good place to grow sugarcane.

8. Punjab

Punjab grew 7.51 million tons of sugarcane last year. It ranks eighth highest sugarcane producing state in India. It has rich, loamy soil and many canals favoring higher growth of sugarcane. In this warm state, rainfall between 500 to  800 mm a year is enough to grow this crop.

9. Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh ranks as the ninth largest sugarcane producing state in india, cultivating 6.44 million tons annually.

The state has black and alluvial soils, a semi-arid climate, and moderate precipitation (800–1200 mm) suitable for growing sugarcane. The majority of sugarcane cultivation in Madhya Pradesh occurs in irrigated regions, enhancing the growth of crops.

10. Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand produced 3.76 million tons of sugarcane last year, ranking it as the 10th highest sugarcane producing state in India. Uttarakhand's subtropical temperature and fertile alluvial soil, especially in the Terai, make sugarcane farming excellent. Moderate to high rainfall (1,000-1,200 mm) and Ganges and Yamuna irrigation help maintain output in the state.

11. Andhra Pradesh

With 2.96 million tons of sugarcane produced last year, Andhra Pradesh is the 11th state in India in sugarcane production. The coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh have humid tropical temperatures and a lot of rain between 900 to 1,500 mm, which are ideal for growing sugarcane. The farmers use the Krishna and Godavari rivers to water their crops.

12. Telangana

Telangana is a promising sugarcane producer. It grew 2.94 million tonnes last year. The tropical semi-arid climate of Telangana, along with well-distributed monsoon rainfall of 800-1,000 mm, makes sugarcane cultivation ideal.

Water retention is appropriate for the cultivation of sugarcane in the black cotton soil of Telangana. During insufficient rainfall, farmers in this region utilize irrigation from the Krishna and Godavari rivers.
