Will the Indian Monsoon in 2024 Be the Monsoon of Hopes?
Indian agriculture thrives on monsoons for their better agriculture productivity and outcomes. Therefore, the farmers are highly dependent on monsoons every year. Unlike last year, which noticed less rains below the expected range. The upcoming June - September 2024 brings hope among farmers of India.
Recently a report from the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal rains in upcoming June -September in India. It brings new hopes among farmers to enhance their productivity and overcome the losses of the previous year's patchy farm outputs. This optimistic outlook is derived from the uneven rainfall experience in 2023. It was a challenging year for farmers, which occurred due to the EI Nino effect.
Southwest Regions Anticipate 106% Rainfall
From the IMD predictions, it is stated the regions of the southwest will have 106% rainfall over the long period (LPA) with a margin of 5% error. And also there is a possibility of above-normal rainfall across India. Hence, It can improve the chances of good harvests and improved agricultural productivity.
Furthermore, IMD also defines an average rainfall from the data of rainfall from the past 50 years, which lies between 96% to 104%, which highlights the importance of this year's rainfall forecast. This monsoon forecast also provides an opportunity for the farming sector and Agriculture industry to make strategic planning and preparations to get the maximum output.
Moreover, the director general of IMD Mr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also highlights the experience from the 9 Years' correlation between the La Nina and above-normal rainfall. It is evaluated from the data reports from 1951 to 2023, that whenever La Nina is preceded with EI Nino (like this year), the country have experienced abundant rains in the monsoon season.
Conclusion
Hence, this rain forecast generates new hopes and opportunities among the farming community and agri industry. Additionally, it can improve the overall economic growth of the country.
