India has always been known for its strong agricultural sector and till now the agriculture sector of India is responsible for more than 50% of the employment of the Indian workforce. It is also responsible for almost 17-18% of India’s GDP. Hence, making it an important sector of the country.

The continuous development and advancement of this sector have made India’s grocery and food market the sixth-largest market in the world. This continuous advancement in this field is important for our country as almost half of the population of this country is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood.

With this said let’s look at the top contributing states of India. So here is the list of the top 10 agricultural states in India.

West Bengal

West Bengal is India's leading grain producer especially when it comes to rice. As it produces almost 146.05 lakh tonnes of rice, with a yield of 2600 kilos per hectare every year. Along with rice and jute, West Bengal is also known for the production of various spices such as chilli, ginger, garlic, coriander, and turmeric.

While Rice and Jute production is on the lead, crops like sesamum, tobacco also helps in making West Bengal one of the top 10 agricultural states in India. Along with these various other crops that are grown in West Bengal includes fruits mango, litchi, pineapple, guava, and orange and vegetables such as cauliflower, tomato, cucumbers, cabbage, okra, and brinjal. Hence basically West Bengal is a hub of mostly all kinds of crops making it the leading agricultural state of India.

Uttar Pradesh

The annual production of 22.5 million tonnes of wheat has no wonder made Uttar Pradesh the leading wheat-producing state of India. Suitable weather condition for wheat production in Uttar Pradesh encourages farmers to cultivate wheat on almost 96 lakh hectares of land annually, hence making it such a large producer of wheat.

But it is for sure that wheat isn’t only responsible for making Uttar Pradesh a leading agricultural state of India. Many crops such as bajra, rice, sugarcane etc. have played a major role in it too. Especially if we talk about sugarcane, Uttar Pradesh is known for its sugarcane production as its hot and humid climate make it the best site for the production of sugarcane. So just like wheat, sugarcane too is grown massively on almost 2.17 million hectares of land resulting in annual production of almost 145.39 million tonnes of sugar. Hence, making Uttar Pradesh a leading producer of sugar too.

Punjab

Punjab is known all over the world for its fertile and productive land, hence also known as the Breakfast of India. As it is suitable for the growth of almost every kind of fruit whether it food grains like wheat or rice, or whether it's about other crops such as sugarcane, fruits and vegetables, Punjab has it all.

Most of the land that is almost 93% of Punjab’s land is utilised in the production of food grains which usually keeps increasing every year.
