Soil compaction is the process in which soil particles are pressed tightly together, reducing the space between them. These spaces, known as pore spaces, are essential for storing air, water, and nutrients that plant roots need for healthy growth. When soil becomes compacted, it becomes denser and harder, making it difficult for roots to penetrate and absorb moisture and nutrients effectively. Soil compaction is a common problem in agriculture, especially in fields where heavy machinery is used repeatedly.
Causes of Soil Compaction
- Frequent movement of heavy tractors and farm machinery.
- Operating machinery on wet or waterlogged soil.
- Excessive livestock grazing in the same area.
- Repeated tillage at the same depth.
- Low organic matter content in the soil.
- Natural pressure from heavy rainfall over time.

- Reduces water infiltration into the soil.
- Limits air circulation around plant roots.
- Decreases nutrient and water uptake by crops.

How to Prevent Soil Compaction
- Avoid using heavy machinery on wet soil.
- Minimise unnecessary tractor and equipment passes.
- Adopt controlled traffic farming practices.
- Maintain proper tyre pressure on agricultural machinery.
- Add organic matter such as compost or farmyard manure.
- Grow cover crops to improve soil structure.
- Practice crop rotation to enhance soil health.
- Use deep tillage or subsoiling only when necessary to break compacted layers.
