What should I check before buying a used harvester?
Asked By : Prateek
A used harvester can save you a lot of money, but a hidden fault can cost even more. Inspect it carefully before you pay.
Engine and hours
-
Check the hours, but don't trust the meter blindly. Look at the overall wear too.
-
Start the engine cold and watch for heavy smoke, knocking or hard starting.
-
Look for oil, diesel or coolant leaks around the engine and hoses.
Cutting and threshing parts
-
Check for bent, worn or missing blades.
-
Look for heavy wear, cracks or gaps in the threshing drum that are too wide.
-
Make sure the sieves and fans are undamaged. And they must clean the grain properly.
Frame, belts and hydraulics
-
Check for uneven wear or cracks in tyres.
-
Fresh welding patches can hide old damage.
-
Cracked belts and loose chains are signs of poor care.
-
Operate the hydraulic system header lift and check for slow response or leaks.
Test run and paperwork
-
Check registration, invoice and ownership papers.
-
Take a trusted mechanic along for an expert opinion.
-
See if there are any spare parts or a service center close by.
-
Run the harvester for 30 minutes in a standing crop and listen for any strange noises.
