Signs oil needs changing regardless of hour count:

• There's a burnt smell when you check it.

• The oil looks noticeably dark or cloudy instead of clear and golden.

• You spot visible dirt, debris, or tiny metal particles floating in it; this one's a bigger red flag since it usually points to internal wear.

Performance red flags to watch for:

• The hydraulic pump is getting noisier.

• The hydraulic movement is jerky or hesitant.

• The hydraulic gets up more slowly than it is used to.

Don't forget the filter:

Whenever you change the hydraulic oil, change the filter at the same time too. A clogged filter restricts flow and puts unnecessary extra strain on the pump, which shortens its lifespan.

If you have access to oil analysis testing, it's a genuinely smarter approach than just going strictly by a fixed hour count, since it tells you the actual condition of the oil and lets you time your changes more precisely based on real wear.
