When should I use a disc plough instead of a cultivator?
Asked By : Abhishek
Use a disc plough for hard, rough, or residue-covered land. Use a cultivator when the soil is already loose.
When to Use a Disc Plough
-
Soil is hard or dry: Rotary discs dig into compacted ground that cultivator tynes only scratch.
-
Rocky field or full of roots: Discs roll over obstacles instead of breaking or jamming.
-
You need deep primary tillage: It digs deep and turns the soil over after harvest.
-
Sticky or clayey land: Discs can roll through heavy soil without clogging easily.
-
Stubble or crop residue: Discs properly cut and bury straw, stalks and roots.
When to Use a Cultivator
-
The soil is already ploughed: It breaks clods into a fine seedbed.
-
You want to control weeds: It uproots them between crop rows.
-
You want to save diesel and time: It needs less pulling power.
Think of it as a two-step job. The disc plough opens the field, and the cultivator finishes it. Always check that the plough size suits your tractor’s horsepower; otherwise, work becomes slow and costly. Also, if your field is lightly tilled every season, a cultivator alone may be enough and will save money on fuel.
