Why are my tractor tyres wearing out unevenly?
Asked By : Tony
Uneven tyre wear is one of the most common problems farmers face, and it usually comes down to a few simple causes.
-
Wrong Tyre Pressure: Low pressure wears out the edges of the tyre, while high pressure wears out the centre. This is the most common reason, and also the easiest to fix.
-
Poor Wheel Alignment: If your front wheels aren't set to the correct toe-in, the tyres drag a little and wear on one side. Loose tie rods or worn steering parts can cause the same problem.
-
Bad Work Habits: Heavy loads on hard roads, sharp turns at speed, and always keeping one wheel in the furrow can wear one side faster. Using heavy implements without proper ballast adds more stress.
How to Fix It
-
Check pressure once a week, when the tyres are cold
-
Get the alignment checked at your service centre
-
Swap rear tyres between sides when possible
-
Keep the load balanced
A little care now can save you the cost of a full new set of tyres later.
