How Does a Soil Tensiometer Work?
The ceramic cup allows water to move between the soil and the instrument. As the soil dries, water is drawn out of the tensiometer, creating a vacuum inside the tube. The vacuum gauge measures this tension, indicating how difficult it is for plant roots to absorb water. After irrigation or rainfall, the vacuum decreases as water moves back into the tensiometer.
