Should I plough wet or dry soil?
Asked By : Aakash
Neither extremely wet nor very dry soil is ideal for ploughing. The best condition is when the soil has moderate moisture, allowing it to break into manageable clods without sticking heavily to the plough.
Why Avoid Wet Soil?
• Can cause soil compaction and damage its structure
• Soil may stick to the plough and reduce efficiency
• Can create large clods that are difficult to prepare for sowing
Why Avoid Very Dry Soil?
• Requires more tractor power and fuel
• Makes ploughing difficult, especially in hard soil
• May produce uneven soil clods
Best Condition for Ploughing
Plough when the soil is moist enough to turn and crumble easily but not so wet that it becomes sticky. The ideal moisture level can vary with soil type, so checking the field condition before tillage is important.
