What is Phytoremediation?
Asked By : sahil ali
Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly and cost-effective environmental cleanup technique that uses green plants to remove, absorb, break down, or stabilize harmful pollutants from soil, water, and air. The term combines the Greek word phyto (plant) and the Latin word remedium (to restore). This natural process is widely used to restore land contaminated by heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum products, industrial chemicals, and other toxic substances without causing major disturbance to the environment.
How Does Phytoremediation Work?
Plants used in phytoremediation absorb contaminants through their roots and either store them in their tissues, convert them into less harmful substances, or prevent them from spreading. Some plants also release natural compounds that stimulate beneficial microorganisms in the soil, helping break down pollutants more efficiently. Common phytoremediation plants include sunflower, Indian mustard, poplar, willow, and vetiver grass.
Benefits of Phytoremediation
