Microgreens Farming is the ultimate "superfood" trend that fits right on your windowsill. Microgreens are the younger version of vegetables, harvested just after the first leaves develop. They are small, mighty, and packed with flavour. Let's check how you can start your own mini-farm.

What is Microgreens Farming?

Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are approximately 1–3 inches tall. Unlike sprouts (which you eat root and all), microgreens are grown in soil or a porous medium and cut at the stem. They are usually harvested 7 to 21 days after germination. As they are harvested so early, their nutrient concentration is very high!

What are the Benefits of Microgreens Farming?

  • Nutritional Powerhouse: Studies show they can have up to 40 times more vitamins and antioxidants than their fully grown counterparts.
  • Flavour Bomb: Their rich flavour profile makes them a great addition to any dish,
  • Space Saver: You don't need acres of land. A balcony or a kitchen shelf is plenty.
  • Speedy Harvest: You get results in less than two weeks.

Best Microgreens to Grow at Home

If you're a beginner, start with these "easy-to-grow" champions:

  • Pea Shoots: Sweet and crunchy.
  • Radish: Super fast (harvest in 6 days!) and spicy.
  • Sunflower: Everyone's favourite large nutty leafy plant.
  • Basil: Smells amazing and grows beautifully indoors.
  • Beetroot: Adds a stunning purple-red color to your plates.

Things Required for Microgreens Farming at Home

You don't need fancy equipment. Just get:

  • High-quality seeds (untreated).
  • A spray bottle for gentle watering.
  • A sunny spot or a simple LED grow light.
  • Growing medium (Coco peat or a light potting mix).
  • Shallow trays (about 2 inches deep) with drainage holes.

Step-by-Step Process to Start Microgreens Farming at Home

  • Take a tray and fill it with moist soil/coco peat to about 1 inch—smooth and level.
  • Thinly apply seed to the surface. Press the seeds lightly and cover the soil.
  • Cover the tray with a second tray or cloth in the dark for 2-3 days to prevent blooming - it will increase their height.
  • Once sprouted, remove the cover and put them in the sun. Light it up.
  • Water regularly (but not too much).
  • If the first set of "true leaves" emerges above the soil line, cut with scissors just above the soil.

Is Microgreens Farming Profitable For Farmers?

Absolutely! Microgreens are referred to as a "high-value" crop in the eyes of commercial farmers. They also need little water and land for production and can be harvested 20-25 times per year, considering the short cycle.

Fresh, local microgreens are a good side business or even a full-scale enterprise, as high-end restaurants and health-conscious urbanites are willing to pay a premium for fresh local microgreens.
