Many regions of India including Sikkim, Jammu Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerela, and Arunachal Pradesh are apt for Kiwi farming. Farmers from these regions can start Kiwi farming and improve their revenue. However, here are a few things to keep in mind before you get started.

1. Farm the right kind of Kiwi variety for Kiwi Farming

choose the right kiwi variety

Choosing the appropriate kiwi variety is crucial for successful kiwi farming. Some popular kiwi varieties suitable for Indian conditions include Hayward, Monty, Allison, Bruno, and Tomuri. Factors such as yield potential, adaptability to local climate, disease resistance, and market demand should be considered while selecting the variety of kiwi for kiwi farming.

2. Know the ideal climate and soil requirements

know the ideal climate and soil requirements

Kiwi plants thrive in regions with a subtropical to temperate climate. This crop requires a chilling period during winter for proper flower bud formation. A temperature range of 10-30°C is ideal for kiwi cultivation.
As far as ideal soil is considered, the soil should be well-drained, rich in organic matter, and have a pH level between 5.5 and 6.5.

It's highly advised to conduct a soil test to learn where the soil of a region is perfect for Kiwi farming. The correct plantation season for Kiwi farming is spring or early monsoon.

3. Keep right spacing

keep right spacing

Space between the rows matters the most in kiwi fruit farming as it supports sufficient air circulation, sunlight penetration, and ease of management. There should be proper spacing between plants and rows so that overcrowding is not there and harvesting becomes easy.

4. Provide enough protection from wind

As the stem of the kiwi fruit is weak, it requires adequate protection from strong wind. While kiwi farming, it's even recommended not to cultivate this crop in areas where wind speed is generally high.

5. Fertilize the right way

To keep the crop healthy in kiwi fruit farming, it’s important to provide the right kind of fertilizer. According to experts, the right quantity of fertilizers or manure is 20kg farmyard manure and 0.5 kg NPK mixture. This should be repeated every 5 years.

6. Prune on time

Pruning is essential for kiwi plants to control their growth, encourage better fruiting, and maintain a manageable plant structure. Follow appropriate pruning techniques, such as winter pruning and summer pruning during kiwi farming, to remove excessive growth and improve fruit quality.

When the right space is concerned, experts recommend araw space between 12 to 15 feet (3.7 to 4.6 meters) as this spacing provides sufficient room for the kiwi vines to grow and spread out, allowing for proper air circulation, sunlight exposure, and ease of management.

A wider row spacing is often preferred when using a T-bar or pergola trellis system, as it allows the vines to have more space to grow horizontally along the trellis wires.
