Plants, like us, need the proper food at the proper time. This is where fertilisers come in. Let's learn about different types of fertilizers used in agriculture.
What Are Fertilizers in Agriculture?

Fertilizers are substances added to soil or plants to promote the growth of crops. Some of these nutrients occur naturally in soil, but are depleted after seasons of farming. Fertilisers bridge that gap.

The three nutrients most required in large quantities by most plants are nitrogen (N) for green leafy growth, phosphorus (P) for root and flowering strength and potassium (K) for general health and disease resistance. Smaller amounts of zinc, iron, sulphur and other micronutrients also matter.

What Are the Different Types of Fertilizers?

There are a few main types of fertilizers:

1. Compost

They are obtained from natural sources such as cow dung manure, compost, vermicompost, green manure, etc. They slowly release nutrients, improve soil texture, water-holding capacity and microbial life. But the problem is that they work slowly, and you need more of them.

2. Chemical Fertilizer

These are synthetic fertilizers such as Urea, DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) and MOP (Muriate of Potash). They provide quick nutrients in measured and controlled amounts, and so many farmers have come to depend on them for quick results. However, when not properly managed, they can eventually harm soil health.

3. Bio Fertilizers

They include species of bacteria like Rhizobium, Azotobacter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria that are alive. They help plants to better absorb nutrients and are cost-effective and eco-friendly.

4. Liquid and Water-Soluble Fertilizers

They are quickly absorbed on application, either by irrigation or by spraying, and are thus suitable for drip farming and horticulture.

5. Micronutrient Fertilizers

Used in small quantities to correct specific deficiencies such as zinc in rice or boron in vegetables.

Which Fertilizer Is Best for Different Crops?

There is no one "best" fertilizer. It depends on the crop and the soil.

  • Sugarcane and cotton are heavy feeders and need nitrogen and potassium in divided doses.
  • A good balanced NPK mix, with plenty of compost, encourages steady growth and better quality vegetables.
  • Urea and DAP (nitrogen-rich fertilizers) are effective for sowing wheat. Zinc is often helpful in growing rice.
  • Organic manure mixed with potash is good for fruit orchards and helps to increase the size and sweetness of the fruit and shelf life.
  • Pulses and soybean fix their nitrogen themselves, so they require less. The most useful are phosphorus and Rhizobium bio-fertilizer.

How to Choose the Right Fertilizer for Your Farm?

Begin with a soil test. It's inexpensive, and it tells you exactly what your soil is lacking so you don't waste money on nutrients you don't need. Keep these points in mind:

  • Know your crop needs at each stage of growth.
  • Use both organic and chemical sources for strong soil health.
  • Use the right quantity at the right time. More is not always best.
  • Follow advice and recommended dosages from your local agricultural officer.
  • Think about your budget and your water supply, since some fertilisers need good irrigation.

Smart fertilising saves you money, protects your land and gives you a healthier harvest.
