Engine and Performance
The engine is the reason Swaraj 744 FE has such a loyal following. It is a three-cylinder, 3,307 cc diesel, which works out to a little over 1.1 litres per cylinder. Big cylinders running at a relaxed 2,000 RPM rated speed are the classic formula for pulling power and long engine life. Its 187.8 Nm torque gives the extra power that helps the engine hold on when you hit a hard patch during deep ploughing.
There is an honest trade-off with three cylinders. Fewer cylinders mean fewer parts, less internal friction, simpler servicing and lower repair bills. The drawback is vibration, because a three-cylinder engine is naturally less balanced than a four-cylinder one. A competitor like the Mahindra 575 DI uses four smaller cylinders and feels smoother, but the Swaraj 744 FE has the stronger pulling force.
One number every buyer should look at is PTO power, not engine HP. The engine makes 46-50 HP, but what reaches your implement at the PTO is 30.1 kW, around 40 HP. That gap is normal because of transmission losses. It is also why you should choose your rotavator, thresher or mulcher by PTO power. An implement that is too wide will make the engine work more, burn extra diesel and shorten its life.
Fuel Efficiency

With the 56-litre tank, expect around five hours at full load and a full working day at lighter loads. The “FE” in the name stands for fuel efficiency, and this FE variant is slightly better on fuel than the XT variant. To get the best from it, work in a higher gear at lower RPM when the load allows, set the implement depth correctly, keep tyre pressures right and avoid long idling.
Transmission, Clutch and Hydraulics
The gearbox is a sliding mesh / partial constant mesh unit with 8 forward and 2 reverse gears as standard, and 12F+3R as an option. Forward speeds run from 2.79 km/h for slow jobs like sowing and rotavator work up to about 31 km/h for trolley runs. Choose the 12-speed box if you do a lot of varied work, because the extra gears let you hit the exact speed an implement wants.
The tractor is offered with a single clutch, dual clutch or independent PTO (IPTO). If you run a rotavator, thresher or baler often, you should pay extra for dual clutch or IPTO. Being able to stop the tractor without stopping the PTO makes project turns easier and saves clutch wear.
Hydraulic lifting capacity is 2,000 kg on a 3-point linkage, with an optional DCV (direction control valve) for finer control. The tractor itself weighs 2,060 kg, so very heavy rear implements like a laser leveller or a big disc harrow will want front weights for stability and steering control.
