How Does Vermiculture Work?
The vermiculture process requires a suitable environment where earthworms can grow and decompose organic material effectively.
- Step 1: Choose a shaded, cool and well-drained location. Direct sunlight and excessive heat can negatively affect earthworms.
- Step 2: Prepare a vermiculture bed using suitable organic materials such as dry leaves, crop residues, partially decomposed farm waste and animal dung.
- Step 3: Introduce suitable composting earthworm species into the prepared bed. Maintain proper moisture and ventilation throughout the process.
- Step 4: Add biodegradable agricultural and household waste in suitable quantities. Avoid materials that may contain harmful chemicals or substances unsuitable for earthworms.
- Step 5: Keep the material adequately moist without making it waterlogged. Regular monitoring helps maintain favourable conditions for earthworm activity.
- Step 6: After the organic material has decomposed and turned into a dark, crumbly material, the vermicompost can be separated from the earthworms and collected for agricultural use.
