What is a Borewell?

A borewell is a narrow, deep hole drilled in the earth to draw groundwater. It is normally drilled by rotary or percussion methods. They’re pretty small in diameter, usually 4” to 12”.

When drilling is completed, a casing pipe is put in to hold the walls open, and a submersible pump is placed in to pump out the water. Borewells can be quite deep, sometimes hundreds of feet deep, especially in areas where the water table has dropped a lot.

  • Properly cased borewells will last for years without any major problems.
  • It is especially useful in hard rock conditions where water can only be reached by deep drilling.

What is a Tubewell?

A tubewell is also a drilled hole, but usually shallower and wider than a borewell, reaching the water table closer to the surface, often in areas of alluvial or sandy soil. It uses a pipe (tube) which is driven into the ground.

At the bottom of the pipe is a strainer that lets water pass but filters out sand and sediment. As the water source is quite shallow, centrifugal pumps are mostly used for tubewells rather than submersible pumps.

Honestly, it depends entirely on your land and location. If you're farming in a region where the water table has dropped or where you're dealing with rocky terrain, a borewell is your safer long-term bet; yes, it costs more upfront, but it'll actually get you water reliably.

On the other hand, if your land is in a fertile, alluvial belt where groundwater is naturally closer to the surface, a tubewell gets the job done faster and cheaper, without the need for expensive deep drilling.

Some farmers even go for both, depending on different plots or seasonal water table changes, but for most, matching the choice to your local soil and water table conditions is the smartest move.
