TAFE to Invest ₹1,250 Crore in 5th Tractor Manufacturing Facility

TAFE, India's second-largest tractor maker, is finally building a brand-new plant after almost 29 years. And this isn't some small update; it's a ₹1,250 crore investment that says a lot about where the company sees itself headed.

Why This Plant, Why Now?

TAFE is setting up its fifth manufacturing facility in a north Indian state, with a planned capacity of around 60,000 tractors. The exact location is still being finalised, but chairperson Mrs. Mallika Srinivasan made the intent crystal clear: "We will be setting up a north India facility with about 60,000 tractors capacity, with the location still being decided."

And it's not just about serving Indian farmers anymore. TAFE's got its eyes set well beyond the border. As Mrs. Shrinivasan put it, "We're confident of growing internationally, and that's why we're putting in capacity. Capacity is now going to come up fast, because it's giving us very good confidence in terms of both domestic and export demand."

That's a pretty bold statement coming from a company that hasn't built greenfield capacity in nearly three decades.

The Numbers Behind the Confidence

This move isn't happening abruptly; TAFE just had one of its best years ever. Revenue jumped 25% to ₹16,000 crore, and the company sold 2,14,000 tractors last year. 

Both Mrs. Shrinivasan and Ms. Laxmi Venu (Vice Chairman, TAFE) credited a mix of factors for this surge: "One, the monsoon was good last year. The second is the government's move on the GST rate for the industry, which gave it a good fillip. Some state governments also rolled out farmer-friendly actions."

The result? A wave of first-time buyers and a noticeable shift toward more premium tractors, exactly the kind of demand that justifies building fresh capacity.

A Personal Touch from Vice Chairman Ms. Lakshmi Venu

What's genuinely refreshing here is how personally involved the leadership is on the ground. TAFE's Vice Chairman Ms. Lakshmi Venu shared that during her regular dealer and customer visits, she likes proving a point herself; she can drive a straight furrow in a 65-HP tractor. 

It's a small gesture, but it says a lot about the vision she's championing: a future where Indian women can just as easily manage farmland on their own terms.

Bigger Picture: TAFE's Corporate Shake-Up

Beyond the new plant, TAFE also made headlines by buying out AGCO's 20% stake in the company for about $260 million, making TAFE a fully-owned subsidiary of the Amalgamations Group. 

Mrs. Shrinivasan was quick to frame this as a natural next step rather than a split: "We have had a long and successful partnership with AGCO; it has lasted for 65 years, and I believe this entire arrangement is a win-win situation. We are still their largest single shareholder."
