Why Are Tractor Companies Investing Heavily in New Plants?
Table of Content
Every tractor brand has been building something for the past few months. New plants, new R&D centres, foreign brands shifting production here. It's not one company doing its own thing quietly; it's basically the whole industry moving at once, and that's rarely a coincidence.
From global giants like Kubota and CNH to homegrown names like Mahindra, TAFE, Sonalika and VST, nearly every major tractor player has announced a fresh investment in India over the last few months. Here's a rundown and how it impacts the future.
Recent Big Investments Across the Tractor Industry
1. Mahindra: ₹15,000 Crore Integrated Plant in Nagpur
In February, Mahindra confirmed its largest-ever integrated automobile and tractor plant, spanning 1,500 acres in Nagpur's Vidarbha region with production targeted for 2028 and a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar. Once running, it will produce over 5 lakh vehicles and around 1 lakh tractors a year.
2. ITL (Sonalika): 25-Acre Global R&D Hub in Greater Noida
Sonalika's parent company, ITL, announced a new 25-acre Global R&D Centre in Greater Noida after a meeting between ITL's management and UP CM Yogi Adityanath. This one's a hub combining engineering expertise with farmer feedback to build agri-tech for Indian and global markets.
3. TAFE: Manufacturing Expansion with New DEUTZ Engine Plant and ₹1,250 Crore Tractor Facility
TAFE inaugurated a new DEUTZ engine production facility at its Alwar plant in Rajasthan, its first-ever manufacturing tie-up with DEUTZ AG, the world's oldest engine maker. Under the licensing deal, TAFE will build DEUTZ's 2.2L and 2.9L engines with capacity for 35,000 engines and 50,000 sub-assemblies a year, using Industry 4.0-level automation.
TAFE is also building a new plant after almost 29 years, backed by a ₹1,250 crore investment. The fifth facility, coming up in north India, will have a capacity of around 60,000 tractors, aimed at meeting both growing domestic demand and TAFE's export ambitions. This move follows a record year for the company, with revenue up 25% to ₹16,000 crore and 2,14,000 tractors sold.
4. Escorts Kubota: 154-Acre Plant in Uttar Pradesh
In August, Escorts Kubota held the groundbreaking ceremony for a new greenfield plant in Sector 10, Gautam Buddha Nagar, on land allotted by YEIDA near the Yamuna Expressway and the upcoming Jewar airport. Spread over 154 acres with an investment of over ₹2,000 crore, it's expected to become one of the largest plants in the whole Kubota Group once complete.
Phase 1 alone targets 60,000 tractors and 15,000 construction equipment units a year, on top of Escorts Kubota's existing ~1.7 lakh tractor capacity.
5. CNH India: ₹2,000 Crore Expansion
CNH India announced a ₹2,000 crore investment by 2030, split roughly into ₹1,000 crore for establishing a new tractor manufacturing facility and ₹1000 crore for research and development and launching new products in both domestic and export markets.
6. VST Tillers Tractors: ₹100 Crore Global Tech Centre in Hosur, Tamil Nadu
In late July, VST performed its Bhoomi Pooja and groundbreaking for a new Global Tech Centre in Hosur (Tamil Nadu), built around both ICE and EV drivetrains to speed up development of next-gen, intelligent farm equipment.
7. Zetor: Shifting Tractor Production From Europe to India
The Czech brand Zetor, which has built tractors in Brno since 1946, is ending 80 years of manufacturing there and moving production to Asia, mainly India, through its joint venture with VST, with a China partnership also in the works.
India or China can run up to a third lower than in Europe, and small-to-mid tractors (up to 130 HP) no longer make economic sense to build there. Brno remains HQ and the development centre; new tractor ranges from Zetor India are expected to launch in Europe as early as 2027.
So What Does All This Actually Add Up To?
Mahindra, Escorts Kubota, TAFE, Sonalika/ITL, VST, CNH, and even a legacy European brand like Zetor, all pouring serious capital into India within roughly the same six-to-eight-month window.
- Some are going straight into production capacity to meet demand already showing up in sales numbers.
- Some are going into R&D and future tech, EV drivetrains, digital manufacturing, Industry 4.0 systems, because the next generation of farm machinery won't look or run like the current one.
- And then there's Zetor. When an 80-year-old European manufacturer decides it's more sensible to build tractors in India than at home, that's not a routine business call; it signals where the centre of gravity in this industry is shifting.
So, overall we can say that the brands are increasing their production because of the increasing demands in both the domestic and export markets, which is backed by 10,30,895 retail tractor sales with an overall increase of 18.55% in the yearly sales.
Tractor Gyan's Take
Taken together, this wave of investment points to a genuine boom building in the Indian tractor industry over the next few years: more capacity coming online, sharper technology reaching the fields faster, and India's role as a global manufacturing base only getting bigger.
For farmers and buyers, that should mean more choice, faster innovation, and better machines showing up at dealerships sooner rather than later.
