Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a scheme with 100% funding from the Government of India. The amount can be availed by husband, wife or minor children and is directly transferred in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. Under the scheme, income support of Rs 6,000 per year is provided to all farmer families across the country in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each, every four months.
Piyush Goyal revealed the initiative during India's Interim Union Budget 2019, on 1st February 2029. The scheme will cost Rs 75,000 crore per annum, and it came into effect in December 2018.
The scheme being the initiative of the state of Telangana as Rythu Bandhu Scheme motivated Govt. of India to implement the same programme across the country.
Further, the scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24th February 2019 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The programme was launched by transferring the first instalment of Rs 2,000 each to more than one crore farmers.
The PM-KISAN scheme aims to support the Small and Marginal Farmers' financial needs. It provides inputs to ensure crop health and yields, in line with the planned farm income at the end of each crop cycle.
It will prevent them from falling into the clutches of moneylenders to meet these expenses and ensuring their continuity in the farming activities.
