Which Season Is Best for Soybean Cultivation in India?

The best time to plant soybean in India is between the third week of June and the first week of July. Soybean is a kharif crop, and this is the best time for the kharif crops.

  • Farmers should wait until the monsoon has brought at least 100 mm of rain and the soil has enough moisture.
  • Sowing after mid-July usually lowers yield.
  • The crop grows best at 26 to 30°C in well-drained black or loamy soil.

Factors Affecting Soybean Production in India

Here is what impacts the soybean production in India.

  • Rainfall: Most soybean is grown without irrigation. A long dry spell at flowering or pod filling cuts yield, and heavy rain can drown young plants.
  • Pests and diseases: Yellow mosaic virus, girdle beetle, and stem fly cause big losses if they are not controlled early.
  • Seed quality: Soybean seed germination is short. Test seeds before sowing, treat with fungicide and Rhizobium culture.
  • SoBBF: Broad-bed furrow sowing with a tractor-drawn planter removes excess water during heavy rain and retains moisture during dry spells.
