Automobile Retail Sales in India Grow 21% in December’23, 11% in CY’23 shows FADA data

FADA’s retail auto sale report is out and we can see many good numbers to celebrate. As the report revealed, the Indian Auto Industry experienced a sales boom in almost all the categories. The report provided data on retail auto sales for December 2023, along with the  Calendar Year( CY) 2023.

Commenting on the numbers, Mr Manish Raj Singhania, President of FADA India, said “ December 2023 was a good month for Indian Auto Retail, as total retail during the period saw a growth of 21% YoY. All categories closed in green, with 2W, 3W, PV, Trac, and CV growing on a YoY basis by 28%, 36%, 3%, 0.2% and 1.3% respectively.

Similarly, for CY'23, the year ended with double-digit growth as total retails during the year saw an increase of 11% YoY. Here also, all categories closed in green, with 2W, 3W, PV, Trac and CV growing on a YoY basis by 9.5%, 58.5%, 11%, 7% and 8% respectively.”

Total Retail Auto Sale Data: Impressive Numbers Ahead

With a total sale of 19,90,915 units in Dec '23, the Indian auto industry recorded a YoY growth of 21.14%. The sale was 16,43,514 units during Dec '22.

Auto industry closed CY '23 with an impressive sales number of 2,38,67,990 units against the 2,14,92,324 unit sales in CY’22. Hence, the YoY growth is 11.05%.

Two Wheeler Retail Sales Data for Dec'23 and CY’ 23

In the two-wheeler category, India sold a total of 14,49,693 vehicles marking a YoY growth of 27.56%. In December 2022, the total sales of this category was 11,36,465 units.

If we talk about CY 23 sales then the total sale is 1,70,61,112 units against the 1,55,88,352 unit sales of CY '22. This way, the 2W category ended the year 2023 with a YoY growth of 9.45%.

Three Wheeler Retail Sales Data for Dec'23 and CY’ 23

Overall, India sold 95,449 units in the Three-wheelers category in December 2023 whereas the sale of this category was 69,976 units during December 2023. Collectively, this category has shown a notable growth of 36.40% YoY.

This sales data is for vehicles like E-Rickshaw (P), E-Rickshaw with carts ( G), three-wheelers ( Goods), three-wheeler( Passenger), and three-wheeler( Personal).

For CY '23, the sales for this category are 10,80,653 units against the 6,81,812 units in CY '22. The YoY growth for this category is an impressive 58.50%.

Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Data for Dec'23 and CY’23

In the Passenger Vehicle category, the total auto sales is 2,93,005 units for Dec '23. There is a slight increase of 2.65% of YoY sales as 2,85,429 units were sold in Dec’ 22.

The CY '23 sale for the PV category is 38,60,268  against the 34,89,953 units sold in Dec’22. Hence, this category recorded a 10.61% increase in YoY sales.

Tractor Retail Sales Data for Dec'23 and CY’23

The total Retail tractor sales in December 2023 in India is 78,872 units, whereas this sales was 78,700 units during Dec’22. This category experienced a YoY growth of 0.22%.

According to this report, the CY '23 tractor sales are 8,71,627 units against the 8,13,923 units sold in CY’22.  The YoY sales surged by 7.09%.

Commercial Vehicle Retail Sales Data for Dec'23 and CY’23

In the commercial vehicle category, FADA revealed that the total retail sales are 73,896 units for Dec '23. This sales number represents the sales of vehicles like LCVs, MCVs, and HCVs. This category experienced a slight increase of 1.31%. This category sold 72,944 units in Dec '22.

Let’s talk about the CY’23 sales against the CY’22 sales. The recorded Commercial vehicle sale data for CY’ 23 and CY ’22 is 9,94,330 and 9,18,284 units respectively. The overall YoY industry growth is recorded as 8.28%.

In light of the information presented in the FADA report, India auto industry has shown commercial growth for Dec '23 and CY’23. This sets a positive tone for Jan’24 and CY’24.
