Bio-pesticides and chemical pesticides are the two most widely adopted methods to control pests. But each one comes with different expenses. Let’s learn which is more cost-effective per acre for farmers.

What Are Bio-Pesticides?

Biopesticides are insecticides obtained from nature itself. These are obtained from bacteria, fungi, viruses, plants, or even good insects and should be applied to low to medium pests.

Examples of popular biopesticides include Neem spray, Bt, Trichoderma, Beauveria, and NPV. These are widely applied in vegetables, fruits, cotton, pulses, and even organic cultivation.

What Are Chemical Pesticides?

Chemical pesticides are synthetic pest control products made of chemicals. Depending on the concentration of chemicals applied, chemical pesticides are very efficient in managing severe infestations by pests.

Which Is More Cost-Effective Per Acre?

Chemical pesticides are generally more economical than biopesticides for immediate pest elimination per acre. Chemical pesticides are cheaper and offer rapid knockdown effects compared to biopesticides. However, biopesticides may prove more economical when applied effectively over time.

Factor Bio-pesticides

Chemical pesticides

Product cost per acre Often moderate to high

Often low to moderate

Speed of action Slower Faster
Number of sprays Usually more frequent Usually fewer
Best use case Prevention, low/moderate pest pressure, IPM

Severe pest outbreak, fast control

Residue risk Low Higher
Resistance risk Lower when rotated

Higher with repeated use

Organic/export crop fit Strong Weak
Short-term cost-effectiveness Medium High
Long-term cost-effectiveness High in the right system

Can fall if resistance/residue issues rise

So, per acre:

  • Choose chemical pesticides when pest pressure is high and crop loss risk is immediate.
  • Choose bio-pesticides when pest pressure is early or moderate and you want lower residues.

Factors That Affect Cost-Effectiveness

  • Stage of Pest: Immature and larval stages of the pest would cost less money compared to mature pests for treatment.
  • Number of Sprays: An inexpensive spray may actually prove to be more costly if multiple sprays are required.
  • Labor Cost and Application of Spray: Spraying will include cost incurred for labor for spraying, cost of fuel, water, machinery, and time involved.
  • Stage of Crop Growth: Treatment of pests in stages where the crop produces flowers, fruits, and seeds is more costly due to possible losses.
  • Development of Resistance: In case the pest develops resistance to the pesticides, the farmer will have no choice but to switch to another type of product or use higher doses, thus increasing costs.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Bio-Pesticides

Biopesticides are inexpensive and safe. However, sometimes biopesticides may not be the best choice. The following is an account of some of the common strengths and weaknesses of biopesticides.

Advantages Disadvantages
Lower residue risk on harvested produce

Slower action than chemicals

Better for soil and long-term farm health Shorter shelf life
Useful when pest pressure is sudden

May fail during severe pest outbreaks

Advantages & Disadvantages of Chemical Pesticides

Chemical pesticides can prove to be very potent, although they require discipline. If you are considering using chemical pesticides, take a look at their pros and cons.

Advantages Disadvantages
Fast action

Higher residue risk

Easy to buy

Can kill beneficial insects

Useful when pest pressure is sudden

Wrong dosage can damage crops

What Farmers Should Consider Before Choosing

Both biopesticides and chemical pesticides aim to control the pest and protect the crop. So, regardless of the option you choose, the key is to use them early, monitor pest levels, and keep serious outbreaks away.
