Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten Commission 42 MWp Solar Project in Punjab

Here's an important update from the tractor world that's got nothing to do with horsepower or hydraulics. Swaraj Tractors, along with Mahindra Susten (the Mahindra Group's renewable energy platform), has switched on a massive 42 MWp solar project in Bathinda, Punjab. And it's one of the largest group captive solar installations the state has seen.

So What's the Project Actually About?

This solar plant is expected to cover around 50% of the electricity needs for Swaraj's manufacturing operations. That's a huge amount of power coming straight from the sun instead of the grid. 

Spread across roughly 141 acres in Talwandi Sabo, the project uses high-efficiency N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules, basically some of the more advanced solar tech out there right now, built to squeeze out more power per acre.

The electricity generated will directly power Swaraj's manufacturing, assembly, and foundry units in Mohali. And whatever's left over? That'll be used to green up other Mahindra Group operations in Punjab too.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds

The plant is expected to generate about 61.54 million units of clean electricity every year, while cutting out more than 42,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. On top of that, over 97% of the components used were sourced from within India, which fits nicely into that whole "self-reliant growth" narrative everyone's talking about.

They're also using semi-automated robots to clean the solar panels, which is expected to save around 1.92 million litres of water every year. Small thing, but it shows the planning went beyond just "put up panels and call it a day."

What Mahindra's Leadership Had to Say

Mr. Gaganjot Singh, CEO of the Swaraj Division, connected this move back to the brand's roots, saying, "Swaraj was founded on the principles of self-reliance and independence," And now that same philosophy is being applied to energy. He also mentioned this builds on Swaraj's earlier Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency, so this clearly isn't a one-off green gesture; it's part of a longer pattern.

Mr. Avinash Rao, MD & CEO, Mahindra Susten, added that this project also marks the company's first time supplying power directly to a commercial industrial customer through this "group captive" model, rather than their usual government utility route. So it's a bit of a milestone for Mahindra Susten too, not just Swaraj.

Honestly, this is the kind of move that deserves more attention than it usually gets. A tractor manufacturer investing this seriously in renewable energy directly impacts long-term manufacturing costs, sustainability credentials, and eventually, even how competitively priced their tractors can stay.

Swaraj's already built a reputation for efficiency-focused manufacturing, and pairing that with solar power makes the whole operation more future-ready. We'll be curious to see if more tractor brands follow this same route in the coming years.
