Dr. Pawan Goenka's Incredible Journey from Mahindra & Mahindra to IN-SPACe

Dr Pawan Kumar Goenka has been selected for the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, marking a major professional milestone as he transitions between the automotive and space industries. His journey from revolutionising India's automotive sector to exploring space is extraordinary.

Motivating Creativity at Mahindra & Mahindra

Dr. Goenka came on board Mahindra & Mahindra as R&D General Manager. By the time he got to the post of Managing Director and CEO, helping to develop well-known cars such as the Scorpio SUV. Thanks to advances in tractor technology, his leadership not only improved Mahindra's reputation in the auto sector but also fundamentally altered India's agricultural situation. 

During his tenure at M&M, he did a lot to improve Indian agriculture with high-tech Mahindra tractors. After being the President of the Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector in 2010, he pushed the manufacturing of tractors and soon by February 2013 the company produced its 2 millionth tractor. 

Key Contributions of Dr. Pawan Goenka

• Friction and Lubrication Analysis: While working at General Motors, Dr. Goenka developed a program called FLARE (Friction and Lubrication Analysis or Reciprocating Engines), which is still in use.
• Father of the Mahindra Scorpio: The first in-house SUV released in 2002, the Scorpio signalled a change. Under his direction, Dr Goenka designed and engineered a robust, moderately priced vehicle based on the concept.
• Micro-Hybrid Technology: Driven by fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability, Dr. Goenka championed micro-hybrid technology in Mahindra vehicles. When not needed, this special technology cleverly turns the engine into standby mode, therefore saving petrol and reducing emissions. 

Awards and Honours Received by Dr. Goenka

• FISITA Medal for his automotive exploits in 2016, being the first Indian to do so.
• Known as the ‘prime architect’ of SAE India – the national body of automotive engineers in India.

A Stellar Change Towards Space Leadership

Following Mahindra's 2021 post-retirement, Dr Goenka welcomed a fresh challenge as the Chairperson of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Madras. 

He has played a crucial role in the development of India's inclusive space ecosystem by supporting private sector participation in the country's space operations and governance. He played a critical role in the development of the Indian Space Policy 2023, as well as the associated standards, policies, and practices. 

Dr. Goenka managed the initiation of foreign direct investment in the space industry as well. IN-SPACe initiated the Decadal Vision and Strategy for the Indian space economy under his leadership, along with an execution roadmap aimed at enhancing India's share in the global space economy.

The Padma Shri recognizes major contributions to space and automotive technologies made by Dr. Goenka.
